Peak oil and climate change will revolutionise our way of life. But the future can be bright if we plan ahead. Around the world, hundreds of communities are forming Transition Towns to plan for a better future without cheap oil.

Katoomba was designated an official Transition Town in July 2008 by the UK-based Transition Network. Transition Blue Mountains covers the towns from Mt Victoria to Lapstone. Ideally we'll see groups sprouting up in the villages as they adapt the Transition Town approach to their particular environments.

The pioneering work by UK Transition Initiative groups provides a practical, realistic strategy for combating the twin threats of global warming and peak oil. A Transition Town develops and implements an Energy Descent Pathway Plan — a strategy to minimise emissions and reduce reliance on oil. Individual and collective projects build long-term sustainability, at the same time creating lives that are more fulfilling, more socially connected and more equitable.
